How many steps are there when I use Caramel to sell my vehicle?
There are six required steps and one optional step to selling a vehicle with Caramel:
- Information: Getting started is easy. All you need is the VIN and mileage of your vehicle. If you’re initiating Caramel checkout, you can optionally enter the email address of your buyer if you have one.
- Offer: The offer phase allows you to set your price and negotiate. Set your asking price & accept, counter, or decline the offers buyers send you. You are able to go back and forth until you both agree on a price.
- Identity: Safety & security are everything to us. That’s why we require every buyer and seller to verify their identity. All you need is a form of government ID & the ability to take a selfie.
- Title: Upload a photo of your title, odometer, and VIN and we’ll handle the rest. If you have a loan on your vehicle, you won’t have to upload a photo of your title.
- Payment: Securely link your bank account to get paid. We initiate a deposit to your bank the minute your vehicle is delivered and title is received.
- Signature: Sign all of your required documents. These documents ensure that we can properly transfer the title to your buyer.
- Inspection (optional): Optionally, you can complete a digital-self inspection. All you need is your smartphone and vehicle. You’ll be guided through a walkaround of your vehicle and prompted to take 13 photos.

Are there any types of vehicles that cannot be sold through Caramel?
Caramel can be used to facilitate nearly any private party vehicle sale, regardless of the car’s condition. We do require sellers to disclose any known damage.
New York Buyer Exception: Due to DMV complications, Caramel cannot be used when the buyer is in the state of New York and the vehicle has been altered to increase its seating capacity or has been damaged to the point that it would cost 75% or more of the vehicle’s retail value to become legal to drive.
